STUDENT VISAS

All persons other than Australian citizens or permanent residents and New Zealand citizens, who wish to undertake studies in Australia, need a valid student visa for travel to Australia. If you wish to undertake an informal course of less than 3 months duration, you may do so if you hold a valid visitor visa or ETA. Student visa holders may apply for work rights via the internet or from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship office, in Australia only. This will allow them to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester/ school term. See - Working while studying

If you have previously applied for a student visa which is going to expire, and want to extend or renew the visa, you should apply for another student visa for the remaining duration of the course you have enrolled in.

Student visas can be applied for via the internet (for Assessment level 1 students only). The Australian Education International office on level 2 of the Australian High Commission is able to provide a list of student agents upon request. See : About the Australian Education International

How do I apply for a Student e-visa via the internet?

Assessment level 1 students (which include Malaysian students except Ausaid or Defence students) may apply for a student e-visa via the internet. From 1 November 2004, Assessment level 1 students below 18 years of age and any student dependants will also be able to apply for a student e-visa via the internet. All Non-Malaysians who are not assessment level 1 students should visit the Immigration website for information and to check the Country Assessment level applicable to them.

Lodgement of student e-visas can be done up to 4 months prior to course commencement date.
